Wrestling is one of the oldest sports in the world. Long before there were state championships, NCAA titles, or Olympic medals, the Bible records one of the most incredible wrestling matches ever.
In Genesis 32, Jacob spent the night wrestling with a mysterious Man. As the story unfolds, it becomes clear this was no ordinary opponent. Even after wrestling all night, Jacob refused to let go until he received a blessing. The Man touched Jacob’s thigh, instantly putting his hip out of joint—showing He possessed divine power. Then He changed Jacob’s name to Israel, meaning “he struggles with God.”
After the match, Jacob named the place Peniel, saying, “For I have seen God face to face, and yet my life has been delivered.” (Genesis 32:30)
Jacob’s life was never the same. He walked with a limp for the rest of his life, which would be a constant reminder that his encounter with God had changed him forever.
Every wrestler knows what it’s like to step onto the mat. The nerves. The pressure. The exhaustion. The discipline it takes to keep going when every muscle wants to quit. Wrestling teaches you that you were never meant to compete alone. Coaches train you. Teammates push you. Family encourages you. The best wrestlers know they don’t succeed by themselves.
There is a wrestling match every single one of us actually competes in, it’s called Life. Every day we’re in a battle, not just against opponents, but against temptation, pride, fear, anger, lust, selfishness, and ultimately death itself.
The question is: Who is on your side?
If you belong to Jesus Christ, you never wrestle alone. He promises to be with His people, strengthen them, forgive them when they fail, and carry them through every trial. That doesn’t mean life becomes easy. It means you’re no longer fighting without the One who has already won the greatest victory through His death and resurrection.
But maybe you’re not wrestling with Jesus. Maybe you’re wrestling against Him.
Jesus didn’t leave room for neutrality. He said, “Whoever is not with Me is against Me…” (Matthew 12:30)
Many people think they can simply ignore Jesus or put Him off until later. But Jesus says every one of us has already made a choice. You are either with Him or against Him. You are either wrestling with Christ on your side, or you are wrestling against the very One who created you.
The problem is that every one of us has sinned. We’ve lied, lusted, hated, stolen, been selfish, dishonored God, and broken His commandments. Our sin separates us from a holy God, and the penalty for sin is death and eternal judgment.
But that’s why Jesus came! God the Son became a man, lived the perfect life we could never live, and willingly went to the cross where He bore the punishment our sins deserve. Three days later He rose from the grave, defeating sin, death, and Satan forever.
The Bible says salvation is not something we earn by being good, winning matches, going to church, or trying harder. It is a gift of God’s grace, received through faith in Jesus Christ. Jesus calls you to repent—to turn from your sin—and trust Him alone as your Lord and Savior. He doesn’t simply want to make you a better wrestler. He wants to make you a new creation.
Just like Jacob, an encounter with God changes everything. So the question is: Will you wrestle with Jesus on your side? Or…Will you keep wrestling against Him?
One path leads to forgiveness, peace with God, eternal life, and the joy of knowing Christ. The other leads to standing against the King of kings … the One before whom every knee will one day bow.
Today, surrender to Christ. Repent from this evil world system and turn to Him! Trust in the One who died for your sins and rose again. Follow Him with your whole heart.
The greatest victory you will ever experience won’t happen under the bright lights of a wrestling mat. It happens when you stop wrestling against Jesus and begin walking with Him.
Choose today – will you wrestle with (on your side) Jesus or wrestle with (against) Jesus.
Choose this day how you want that match to go!
