Philip Pullman’s Demonology

Philip Pullman is not content to simply diminish the glory of God and lead children to believe that rebelling against Him and siding with Satan is beneficial. He journeys further down the slippery slope and makes it appear as though a child’s contact with demonic beings is attractive, normative and even necessary. In Pullman’s retelling of the fall, everyone has his or her own “daemon” (pronounced demon). Daemon is simply the Greek word for demon or devil. Pullman recast the fall in such a way that one realizes their godhood through demonic possession. He rewrites Genesis as though consciousness of ones deification comes from the revelation of ones personal demon:

“And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die: For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and your dæmons shall assume their true forms, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil.

And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to reveal the true form of one’s dæmon, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat. And the eyes of them both were opened, and they saw the true form of their dæmons, and spoke with them.

But when the man and the woman knew their own dæmons, they knew that a great change had come upon them,… "And that was how sin came into the world," he said, "sin and shame and death. It came the moment their dæmons became fixed. ” –Philip Pullman, The Golden Compass, pp. 326-327

These daemons are there to guide and assist one in making decisions. Of course, many of the daemons in Pullman’s story encourage in the rebellion of Satan and the overthrow of God. This is similar to the activity of demonic beings who are in league with Satan as revealed in Holy Scripture. The difference is that Pullman candy coats the demons and puts a friendly and quirky spin on many of them to the point that they become appealing in most cases. In fact, in Pullman’s demonology, he makes the demons not only attractive but also necessary for ones success. He portrays them as corporate entities, which are part familial spirit, part animal and part soul. If a demonic being manifests in an ugly and grotesque manner, no worry for Pullman because they are simply manifesting the mood of the person they belong to. By this means, Pullman is able to get children to identify with demonic beings as helpers whom they would otherwise flee in fear.

On Pullman’s web site he seeks to normalize demonic possession and spirit guides by claiming that everyone has a demon, “the readers feel as if they’ve got a dæmon themselves. And my point is that they have, that we all have. It’s an as pect of our personality that we often overlook, but it’s there.”

It appears that a powerful demon has channeled the very doctrines of devils that the apostle Paul warned would come in the last days through Pullman who admitted to the New York Times that, “So that’s why I welcome Halloween…My imagination comes to life only in the presence of the uncanny; the despot I serve is the part of my mind that feels a thrill as fierce and sudden as lust when it encounters a deserted graveyard, or comes on the idea of personal daemons…”

Even as Pullman borrows from C.S. Lewis in the beginning of his series with a little girl in a wardrobe who stumbles upon another world, he seems also to take another page out of C. S. Lewis’ Screwtape Letters when it comes to his “daemons.” In the Screwtape Letters, the senior devil, Wormwood, instructs the junior devil, Screwtape, that they must make their demonic powers seem friendly or innocuous so as to deceive humans into opening themselves up to their wicked and destructive powers in their war against God. Pullman, in his “devilishly inventive” way, not only makes communion with demonic entities attractive to the young, but he also depicts separation from demons as a painful and deadly experience.

Lyra, who plays the part of the new Eve, has her own personal “daemon” and rather than it being an evil spirit, it is presented as a cute and cuddly little creature with plenty of soft fur. If one is severed from ones daemon, we are told, that the person would suddenly die. Thus children are being taught that demonic spirit guides can be cute and cuddly and are an absolute essential if we are to live successful lives. At a time when more and more new agers are introducing children to their “spirit guides,” Pullman’s, Dark Materials, only bolsters the ongoing deception. Children are being further encouraged to open their hearts and consciences to evil demonic beings that have no other real motive than the glorification of Satan and the destruction of their souls.

Pullman nicknames Lyra’s demon, Pan. Pan has long been a depiction of the devil in occult teaching. Satanist, Aleister Crowley, arranged to have his satanic poem, The Pipes of Pan, read at his funeral and Anton LaVey, the founder of the Church of Satan, lists Pan as another name for Satan under the "Infernal Names" in his Satanic Bible. It is fitting, since Lyra is to be a picture of Eve, that her daemon would have a name that has long been used for the devil.

An advertisement for Pullman’s trilogy appearing in, Quality Paperback Book Review, quotes one of the leading characters in Pullman’s trilogy, Serafina Pekkala, who happens to be a witch working on behalf of Satan in his quest to murder the God figure, stating, “All the history of human life has been a struggle between wisdom and stupidity. The rebel angels, the followers of wisdom, have always tried to open minds; the Authority and his churches have always tried to keep them closed.” Thus we see the perpetuation of the lie that rebel angels are good and only desire us to open our minds. This sounds adventurous until one realizes that Satan wants us to open our minds to his wicked ways in the same way a computer hacker would like us to keep our computers unprotected from viruses so he could reek havoc. God’s Wisdom is said to be pure and comes from above while satanic knowledge is based upon deception. No wonder Jesus called Satan the "father of lies" and a "murderer from the beginning" (John 8:44 ). God’s Word warns that the very doctrines of demons that Pullman is propagating would become popular in the last days and even lead believers from the faith:

"The Spirit clearly says that in later times some will abandon the faith and follow deceiving spirits and things taught by demons. Such teachings come through hypocritical liars, whose consciences have been seared as with a hot iron." –1 Tim. 4:1-2

Tragically, we live in a time where parents seem to be at an all time low in discerning spiritual deception. The satanic spiritual realm must be relishing in the fact that deception has become like child’s play in these last days.

Pullman’s Caricature Of The Church

Phillip Pullman not only relishes in undermining the Christian faith by attacking the creator of the universe, glorifying Satan and demonic possession, but he also shows his hatred for the bride of Christ, the church. Pullman’s Satan figure, "Lord Asriel," hates everything about the death Jesus Christ died to save humanity from their sins and is depicted as hating the church:

“Well, Lord Asriel has never found himself at ease with the doctrines of the Church, so to speak. I’ve seen a spasm of disgust cross his face when they talk of the sacraments, and atonement, and redemption, and suchlike. . . Lord Asriel’s been nursing a rebellion in his heart for a long as I’ve served him, that’s one thing I do know?” –Philip Pullman, The Subtle Knife, p. 40

Pullman depicts Lyra’s mother, Mrs. Coulter (who is strongly identified with the church), as one who relishes in torturing children. Pullman depicts the church in a fashion that resembles the times of the inquisition as though this represents the true church of Christ. He has the Vatican located in Geneva, conjuring up pictures of the persecution that took place upon non-conformist under John Calvin. Moreover, Pullman adds elements of Nazism to his caricature of the church wherein there are wicked priests involved in human experimentation. The truth of the matter is that historians and theologians alike know that the inquisition was political and not Christian and in no way reflected the teachings of Christ or the early church. In fact, for the first three centuries of church history, Christians were fed to the lions and persecuted to death by pagans and occult practitioners. Unfortunately, Pullman’s young audience may not know enough about history, the scripture and Christianity to make a distinction between true Christians and counterfeits.

Don’t expect Pullman to accurately show them the difference because he relishes in fantasy and abhors the truth. Christ taught his followers to turn the other cheek and that if one rejected the saving gospel His followers were to wipe the dust from their feet and proceed to the next home. He taught His disciples that His kingdom was not of this world and that they were to be wise as serpents, yet harmless as doves. True Christians are known by their obedience to Christ’s commands and the fruit they bare to His glory. Counterfeit Christians use Christ’s name for political advantage yet refuse, like Pullman, to submit to His Lordship and moral teaching. Never mind that the most infamous and heinous crimes against humanity have been committed by Darwinian eugenicists and occultists like Adolph Hitler. In fact, over a hundred million people have been murdered in the last century by atheists like Stalin, Mao and Pol Pot.

The reason why people like Pullman reject God is because they want to be able to commit wicked and perverse acts and believe that they will somehow escape accountability before God. The Bible states:

"The fool says in his heart, ‘There is no God.’ They are corrupt, their deeds are vile; there is no one who does good." –Psalm 14:1

This truth comes out repeatedly in Pullman’s trilogy but perhaps never as poignantly as in the life of his character Mary Malone, who renounces God so that she can continue to have illicit sex. Malone says, that if there is no God then there is “no one to punish me for being wicked,” and she further states:

“And I thought: am I really going to spend the rest of my life without ever feeling that again? … And I took the crucifix from around my neck and I threw it in the sea. That was it. All over. Gone.”

Malone’s desire to live an immoral life leads her to conclude, “The Christian religion is a very powerful and very convincing mistake, that’s all.” When all is said and done the Golden Compass is utterly devoid of a moral compass and will lead many of its young readers away from God.

In, The Subtle Knife, Pullman has one of his good characters exclaiming that the church “…tries to suppress and control every natural impulse.” Here again we see satanic philosophy at its core taught in Pullman’s trilogy. The theme of Anton’s LaVey’s Church of Satan is to indulge any and all so-called natural impulses. God’s Word states that there are impulses that we are prone to that are "unnatural" and destructive (Romans 1:18-31 ). Could you imagine how many potential Jeffrey Dahmer’s are having their consciences seared by reading Pullman’s satanic trilogy? Would any parent dare encourage their children to follow all of their so called, “natural” impulses? How many pedophiles now justify their rape and murder of children based on Pullman’s kind of argumentation? How is Pullman to discern the difference between what is moral or immoral, natural or unnatural without any reference to God or a higher authority?

To further poison the hearts of innocent children toward the things of God, Pullman has one of the "good" witches tell the sisters that the church takes little children and, “cuts their sexual organs, yes, both boys and girls, they cut them with knives so that they shan’t feel. That is what the church does, and every church is the same…” (Phillip Pullman, The Subtle Knife, p. 45) If Pullman is drawing from the Jewish teaching of circumcision, which had nothing to do with not feeling and did not include "girls," he is misrepresenting it like everything else he caricatures. Moreover, Christian teaching makes it quite clear that circumcision is not advocated for Christians (Galatians 5:1-4 ). The “good” witch states, “That is what the church does, and every church is the same,” yet I know of only one church that advocates cutting of sexual organs of boys and girls and that would be certain satanic churches.

The truth of the matter is that Satanists who have championed similar views to Pullman have proscribed to their followers things much worse than what Pullman would have his young readers imagine of Christian churches. For example, Aleister Crowley, the most highly regarded Satanist organizer of modern times, wrote much about carrying out the very rebellion of which we find many elements in Pullmans’ trilogy. Crowley must have greatly impressed Pullman and possibly helped inspire his trilogy, as he, not Christians, advocated the molestation and abuse of children. In Crowley’s, The Vision and the Voice, he states:

“The supreme Rite would be to bring about a climax in the death of the victim…Even better would be to slay a girl, preferably a willing victim. After violating her, she should be cut into nine pieces…the arms are then to be flayed, and burnt…it should be disclosed to no man” –Aleister Crowley, The Vision and the Voice, York Beach, Maine: Samuel Weiser, 1998

God only knows how many of the recent abductions are the result of the teachings of Satanists and the lawless culture that Pullman and others are advocating – all in the name of freedom from the authority.

Where Is All Of This Heading?

Pullman presents the Christian God as the “dying God”whose time has come and gone and with his demise comes the heralding of a new age. As we have seen, his satanic philosophy has much in common with that of Aleister Crowley. In fact, we could conclude that Pullman is not an atheist but a Satanist in atheist clothing. When Pullman was told by an interviewer that, “A lot of people assume from The Amber Spyglass that you must be an atheist,”Pullman’s revealing response was:

“Well, they can assume what they like. Of course, I don’t say, ‘There is no God.’ I say: ‘There is a God, and here he is dying’ – and this is what I was particularly pleased with, as a result of an act of charity. And he goes ‘with a sigh of the most profound and exhausted relief.’”

Crowley taught, before Pullman, that Jesus Christ is the “Dying God.”He claimed that the New Age of Horus was at hand and that mankind should be governed by the anarchical and licentious maxim, “Do What Thou Wilt Shall be the Whole of the Law.”Crowley named the new age after the Aeon of the hawk headed god, Horus, and said, “With my Hawk’s head I peck at the eyes of Jesus as he hangs upon the cross. ”

Pullman may have named his Adam figure "Will" because his "will" is presumably more important than that of God’s. The deception is profound as one ends up ultimately submitting to the will of Satan and fallen angels and doing their bidding in the name of freedom. At Crowley’s Abbey Of Thelema where he put his doctrine into practice, he promised his followers great freedom, but in the end they became his sex slaves. Alfred Kinsey who traveled to Crowley’s sex temple with Satanist, Kenneth Anger, reported seeing full-size pornographic pictures of Crowley with women and children engaged in orgies. No one was able to even use the word "I" in reference to themselves, except Crowley, of course. Such are the vain hopes of freedom outside of God as they lead to deception and servitude to others. Jesus said no one can serve to masters and further warned, “He that is not with Me is against Me”(Matthew 12:30). Even Bob Dylan acknowledged that one will serve either God or the devil, but you will serve one or the other. The difference is that God is the Creator, Redeemer, Lover of our souls and the ultimate Judge, whereas Satan is the true usurper who desires to take as many unwitting souls to suffer in hell with him as possible. Pullman’s promise of freedom from God is ultimately the grossest of servitude to the devil. Interestingly, Aleister Crowley wanted his name to be pronounced "crow-ley" because he identified with the crow. When Phillip Pullman was asked to identify his personal daemon if he were to choose he said it would have to be a crow.

Pullmans pronouncement that God is dead and that there is no ultimate authority for children to follow is no more liberating than removing speed limit signs and guard rails from a hairpin turn on a steep canyon road. Our creator gave us moral laws to guide our lives out of love so we would not destroy each other. His laws governing sexual behavior and limiting such behavior to marriage not only underscores His beautiful plan of redemption between Christ and his bride, the church, but liberates humans from contracting sexually transmitted diseases which are now in epidemic proportions. It was revealed in the fall of 2007 that over 1 million young people have contracted Clymidia, setting a new record while millions more have died of AIDS. Pullman is not preaching a gospel of freedom but a false gospel leading to sin, death, destruction and eternal damnation. God’s Word warns that in the last days, prior to Christ’s return, false prophets like Pullman would arise promising freedom, but in reality leading the masses to enslavement to various vices and depravity:

"But there were also false prophets among the people, just as there will be false teachers among you. They will secretly introduce destructive heresies, even denying the sovereign Lord who bought them-bringing swift destruction on themselves. Many will follow their shameful ways and will bring the way of truth into disrepute. In their greed these teachers will exploit you with stories they have made up. Their condemnation has long been hanging over them, and their destruction has not been sleeping….Blackest darkness is reserved for them. For they mouth empty, boastful words and, by appealing to the lustful desires of sinful human nature, they entice people who are just escaping from those who live in error. They promise them freedom, while they themselves are slaves of depravity-for a man is a slave to whatever has mastered him" –2 Peter 2:1-3, 17b-19

In his fairy tale, Pullman teaches that life supposedly originated from condensing dust and thus there is no need to be concerned about answering to a creator in regard to ones behavior. We have received a steady diet of this teaching in public schools as well as in popular media and we are now suffering the horrendous fallout because of such lies. We allow our children to be taught that they are mere animals that have evolved from pond slime and then we wonder why we now have to build cages around our schools to protect our children from one another.

Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold claimed that they had evolved higher than other human beings and life had no real value before they killed several students and a teacher during the Columbine massacre. Harris wore a shirt to their planned massacre declaring “Natural Selection.”Pekka-Eric Auvinen, who recently gunned down seven students and a teacher in Finland also rejected God as the authority of his life and claimed that he too was evolving. Auvinen wore a shirt declaring “HUMANITY IS OVERATED”during his massacre. It is clear to anyone who will admit the obvious that the worldview that Pullman and others are propagating cheapens life as it denies the scriptural truth that we are fearfully and wonderfully made in the image of God. This worldview further maintains that life is ultimately without meaning and that one does not need to be concerned about being accountabie to God or facing Him in judgment when one dies.

Jeffrey Dahmer, like Harris, Klebold, and Auvinen bought into this very same worldview which led him to follow the most base and fallen of human impulses in murdering and cannibalizing 17 men and children. In an interview with MSNBC before his own death he stated that it was such a view that led him to undertake such wicked behavior in committing his grizzly murders:

“I always believed the lie that evolution is truth – the theory of evolution is truth – that we all just came from the slime and when we died, you know, that was it, there was nothing. So the whole theory cheapens life….And I started reading books that show how evolution is just a complete lie, because there’s no, there’s no basis in science to it to hold it, and I’ve since come to believe that, uh, that the Lord Jesus Christ is the true Creator of the Heavens and the Earth – it didn’t just happen. I have accepted Him as my Lord and Savior. And I believe that I, as well as everyone else, will be accountable to Him.”

Like Pullman Dahmer created his own little fantasy world of which he was his own god:

“After I left home that’s when I started to create my own little world where I could be the one who had complete control. Where I didn’t have to bow to anyone else’s demands and I just took it way too far.”

How many more Jeffrey Dahmer’s is Phillip Pullman breeding? God only knows how many thousands of children will be adversely influenced and end up throwing their lives away along with the lives of countless others because Pullman has taught them that they are mere accidents from the fortuitous forces of nature and have no value as creations of God. Pullman falsely stereotypes the church by failing to make a distinction between true Christians and hypocrites like himself stating, “The churches in every world are corrupt and weak…”(Philip Pullman. The Amber Spyglass, p. 54)

Pullman not only poisons the minds of the youth toward God, but he also effectively plants seeds of hatred in the minds of impressionable children to wage war against Christians in the future. This is part of a conditioning process that Satan has waged through Hollywood and the music industry for decades now. Just after Pullman falsely characterizes the church as butchering boys and girls, he has one of his “good”characters declare that a war is coming between Satan’s followers and the church:

“There is a war coming, boy. The greatest war there ever was. Something like it happened before, and this time the right side must win. We’ve had nothing but lies and propaganda and cruelty and deceit for all the thousands of years of human history. It’s time we started again, but properly this time.”–Philip Pullman. The Subtle Knife , pp. 282

He further prepares his huge audience to come against the church with the following words:

“So if war comes and the Church is on one side of it, we must be on the other, no matter what strange allies we find ourselves bound to.”–Phillip Pullman, The Subtle Knife, p. 45

Just as Pullman describes the biblical God, Yahweh, as not existing from everlasting but as mysteriously condensing from dust, he also presents his god as not existing “to everlasting”and has him dying off as a desperately feeble and senile old man. He has his hero kill god by exposing the feeble and pathetic old man to the elements:

“Demented and powerless the aged being could only weep and mumble in fear and pain and misery, and he shrank away from what seemed like yet another threat…The old one was uttering a wordless whimper that went on and on, and grinding his teeth, and compulsively plucking at himself with his free hand…they helped the ancient of days out of his crystal cell; it wasn’t hard, for he was as light as paper, and he would have followed them anywhere, having no will of his own…But in the open air there was nothing to stop the wind from damaging him…his form began to loosen and dissolve….Then he was gone: a mystery dissolving in mystery.”

What many people are unaware of is the fact that there is indeed a cosmic war between Satan and his fallen angels and the Lord God and the angelic hosts of heaven (Revelation 12:7-17 ). This war includes attacks against the church and Christ. In fact, we are told in the book of Revelation that the world gathers together under the deluding influence of the Antichrist at the end of the age to make war against Christ at His Second Coming:

"The ten horns you saw are ten kings who have not yet received a kingdom, but who for one hour will receive authority as kings along with the beast. They have one purpose and will give their power and authority to the beast. They will make war against the Lamb, but the Lamb will overcome them because he is Lord of lords and King of kings-and with him will be his called, chosen and faithful followers" –Revelation 17:12-14)

The results of this war are already determined by the all-knowing God. Potential for victory only exists in the vain imaginations of those whom Satan has fully deceived and is leading to eternal damnation (Revelation 20:1-15 ). By the grace of God, the church is also guaranteed a resounding victory by the Lord Jesus Christ and assured that Satan will not be successful in his attempt to destroy the church. Jesus promised, "…upon this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell will not prevail against it!" (Matthew 16:18 ). He is not coming back for a church that tortures little children or leads them into believing that Satan will have the victory, but for the true church, "a radiant church, without stain or wrinkle or any other blemish, but holy and blameless" (Eph. 5:27b ).

God’s Word warns that one of the signs of the last days would be the emergence of scoffers who would arise and blaspheme God in order to justify their perverse behavior:

"First of all, you must understand that in the last days scoffers will come, scoffing and following their own evil desires." –2 Peter 3:3

It also pronounces the severest judgment for those who call evil good and good evil:

"Woe to those who call evil good and good evil, who put darkness for light and light for darkness, who put bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter" –Isaiah 5:20

God further reveals that blasphemers will be judged at the Second coming of Christ when he returns in glory:

"See, the Lord is coming with thousands upon thousands of his holy ones to judge everyone, and to convict all the ungodly of all the ungodly acts they have done in the ungodly way, and of all the harsh words ungodly sinners have spoken against him" –Jude 1:14b-15

Pray for the salvation of Phillip Pullman because he is in far greater peril than He is probably aware of. While he will be woefully unsuccessful in killing God as was Nietzsche before Him, like Nietzsche, he will no doubt be successful in killing God in the minds of many. Jesus said of Judas that it would have been better for him to have never been born and he said of men like Phillip Pullman, who corrupt children, that they will suffer the worst punishment of all. Jesus warned that it would be better for them to have a large Millstone tied around their necks and then be cast into the sea than to experience the fierce judgment they will receive for molesting the minds and souls of little children and turning their hearts from Him (Matthew 18:6 ). God’s Word warns, "It is a terrible thing to fall into the hands of the living God." –Hebrews 10:31

What Is A Parent To Do?

I would encourage parents and their children to avoid seeing, The Golden Compass and to avoid all of Phillip Pullman’s Dark Materials. While godly parents will certainly want to protect their precious children from Pullman’s satanic diatribe, I personally am a strong believer that God often uses much of what Satan means for evil for good. He does this over and over again and the cross of Christ, which was meant by God’s enemy’s to destroy Him, is exhibit "A", being the very means by which God saves the lost. Goliath’s sword, which David used to sever his head from his body, is yet another powerful example of how God uses to His glory what Satan means for evil. I believe we are wise to point out to our children where Phillip Pullman is coming from and what his objective is.

The Bible warns us to "have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness but rather expose them" (Eph. 5:11; 2 Cor. 2:11 ). In so doing, we equip our children with the truth which is their greatest weapon against the enemy’s lies. By revealing the truth we are able to give greater evidence that we do indeed live in a world filled with dark, demonic forces that seek to overthrow the knowledge of God. Such evidences further confirm the truth of Holy Scripture and can only make children wiser and better able to face the world with the knowledge of God so they can effectively engage in the spiritual warfare to which we are all called. Though we should avoid allowing our children to be bombarded by Pullman’s God-hating propaganda, if they are mature enough, we should inform them about the deadly poison in the sweet candy he offers. Many children will be able to use this information as a springboard into the gospel with their friends and hopefully and prayerfully lead them to Christ. Take time to show your children who the true God really is! Read the last three chapters of Revelation to your children and remind them that in the end, the Good and Sovereign God wins!

Thankfully we can teach our children God’s truth from Holy Scripture which affirms (as does the witness of creation all around us) that God is not only our creator, the maker of the heavens and the earth (Romans 1:18-32 ) but that "God is good," and "God is love" (Psalm 100:1-5; 1John 4:8, 16 ). We who are parents can use this as an opportunity to share truth with our children and spend more time in God’s Word with them. We can show them how absurd Pullman’s fairy tale really is and how “powerful and convincing”as Pullman admits, Christianity is! It is also imperative that we teach our children the attributes of God from Holy Scripture, including the ones that Pullman denies. The Scriptures repeatedly reveal that the true and living God has no beginning and no end, but is "from everlasting to everlasting."

"Lord, you have been our dwelling place throughout all generations. Before the mountains were born or you brought forth the earth and the world, from everlasting to everlasting you are God." –Psalm 90:1-2

I hope this article challenges you to do more to get God’s truth to our children than Phillip Pullman is doing to spread Satan’s lies. The Bible reveals that in the end times God will raise up a body of believers to do mighty exploits that would reveal what the enemy is doing. He also declares that while Satan would be going after our children, He would turn the hearts of the fathers back to the children and the hearts of the children back to the fathers. It is our hope that you will pass this information along so others will be aware of Satan’s strategy for their souls and those of their children. Our prayer is that each reader would know that God so loved them that even though they have broken His Holy law and deserve eternal death, in His great love, He became a man, suffered the penalty we deserve upon the cross and rose three days later from the grave to conquer death.
