Frequently given the nod as the most esteemed director in Hollywood is the acclaimed Steven Spielberg, who has created household names out of E.T., Close Encounters, Jaws, and Jurassic Park. His movies span the entire realm of storytelling, from The Color Purple to Peter Pan to Poltergeist. While his influence in Hollywood is undeniably great, the question must still be asked: are the themes of his films positive and conducive to the truth of the Scripture?

One of Spielberg’s motion pictures, A.I., was the brainchild of deceased esoterist Stanley Kubrick. This film sets itself in a society where technology is so far advanced that computers are made to look like ordinary human beings – and to fulfill their every desire. Some are even designed to function as prostitutes and have sex with whoever beckons. Actor Jude Law has spoken of the "overtly sexual" themes of the film as well. The end of the film finds the human race extinct with the earth left to alien beings with higher intelligence. This humanistic view of the future not only dismisses but also destroys the idea of God and the prophetic plan He has laid out for mankind, as described in Revelation 19-22. We are all accountable to a Creator yet this fact was never factored into the equation in any of Kubrick’s philosophical cinema. The fact that Spielberg took it upon himself to bring this film to life demonstrates his own proclivity for false philosophical ideologies.

Nonetheless, Spielberg is frequently acclaimed as a brilliant producer of children’s films (Shrek) and has geared much of his material to capture them. Of A.I. he confessed: "I’m hoping this movie will get families and young people, but you never know." Yet as we shall see, this Pied Piper of Hollywood is no friend to you or to the innocent children he targets.

How does Spielberg strike a vein in moviegoers? Spielberg has stated that his primary motivators for making movies were what have plagued him from his youth: his fears and anxieties. This is precisely what he is placing into the hearts of his audiences – his own fears and insecurities. Spielberg recollects:

Steven Spielberg

"I had no way to sublimate or channel those fears until I began telling stories to my younger sisters. This removed the fear from my soul and transferred it right into theirs."

For example, the movie that initially launched Spielberg into the limelight was Jaws, a film that he created to upset people. Spielberg confessed:

"I wanted to do Jaws for hostile reasons. I read it and felt that I had been attacked. It terrified me, and I knew that I wanted to strike back…"

The scenes in the film terrified thousands of people and summer beach attendance dropped significantly after it hit the theaters. This is another unarguable proof that movies in fact do shape our lives and effect many life decisions. After seeing the film, how many of us can relate to a time when the thoughts of a "Jaws-like" shark attack entered our minds?

However, much more serious are the powerful life changing effects that Spielberg has impacted the public consciousness with in the spiritual/ supernatural arena. Many of Spielberg’s films carry overt as well as covert spiritual messages. E.T. The Extra Terrestrial, depicted a being that came from above, who died and came back to life again and thus transformed the lives of everyone who came into contact with him. This is exactly what Jesus Christ did, and as a result the Messianic overtones in this film are somewhat disturbing. Before E.T., outer space alien creatures were presented in a frightening manner – this movie was the first to present them as adorably loveable. Many Christians contend that the great delusion surrounding the coming Antichrist spoken of in 2 Thessalonians 2:9-11 will involve demonic alien beings who will befriend mankind only to insure his doomed fate, similar to the situation presented in Genesis 6:1-5. It is possible that films like E.T. only work to break down the world’s barriers against such a demonic "invasion" from "outer space."

However, far beyond speculations and theoretical interpretations of Spielberg’s films are the hard facts. Spielberg’s box office hit, Poltergeist, stories a family who comes into contact with a spirit that reeks havoc upon their family and is ultimately exorcised by a psychic medium. Spielberg sums up the spiritual intent of the film with the following statement:

Poltergeist
Poltergeist

"The film has some incredibly spiritual things in it…we show the spectral light that comes to earth, piercing a hole in time and space into the home of a suburban family…In our film, they are spirits or ghosts who don’t know they are dead and who need a guide to take them into the next plane of existence through a gateway of spectral light."

The Scripture completely condemns such activities. These are commonly found in the occult and knowingly inspired by the demonic realm. Of the upsetting situations he presented in the film, these carried a personal message characteristized by Spielberg’s own distinct spiritual experiences and philosophy. The film, based upon experiencing the reality of spirit guides, was admittedly derived from his own experiences. Spielberg stated:

"My enthusiasm for wanting to make Poltergeist would have been difficult for any director I would have hired. It derived from my imagination and my experiences, and it came [partly] out of my typewriter."

There can be no doubt that these spirit experiences are calculatedly influencing and empowering his directorial imagination and success. Moreover, the doctrines that are found in Spielberg’s films are readily found in New Age teachings and practices.

For example, the storyline of Spielberg’s Jurassic Park III is couched in evolutionary philosophy that makes its way throughout the film. Through the use of special effects, the audience is left spellbound and hence in a more impressionable and receptive state to this message. Equally alarming is Hollywood’s belligerent use of their bully pulpit for the proselytizing of our youth. Teachers across the country have been sent Jurassic Park III "Educational" CD-Roms for use in their classrooms. These will serve to further the evolutionary cause in our schools that sprung to life in the mid twentieth century.

The book of Ephesians (6:12) reveals that the world is in the midst of a battle that wars not against flesh and blood but against spiritual principalities and powers which seek to institute the Devil’s schemes. It also speaks of how Satan implements these schemes through men, "sons of disobedience," who reject the truth of the Scriptures (Ephesians 2:2). These men help to facilitate Satan’s wicked purpose for mankind, which is to deceive the world into pseudo religion and worship of him so that all might be damned to the lake of fire. The themes of Spielberg’s films contribute to humanistic and New Age lies on virtually every level and are therefore "anti" Christ. As Jesus stated, "He who is not for Me is against Me." Spirit contact for the transmission of demonic doctrines, as illustrated by Spielberg’s experiences, is one of the most common avenues demons utilize to prepare the world for the coming Satanic revolution. (1 Timothy 4:1-2)

The lessons in Spielberg’s own films are congruent with occult practices and other "doctrines of demons." This is no coincidence considering that Spielberg has in fact had contact with spirits and has referred to something manifesting through and around him, but has chosen not to reveal the details. He said:

"It is a very, very personal thing that I won’t discuss. I’ve always wanted to see a UFO, and never have. But ghosts-that’s another story."

Whatever "ghosts" are influencing Spielberg, we know that they are not good or from the Lord.

Spielberg’s movies have indulged in full-blown paranormal activity as well as traditional attacks on the family while glorifying homosexuality (American Beauty). Armed with their own twisted ideas of reality, Hollywood’s growing number of influential homosexuals are depositing these ideas via entertainment, which is systematically deconditioning society through systematic covert efforts to dismantle and destroy the family as God intended it. Gay activists are thrilled with the outcome thus far. Micah Mahjoubian, a homosexual activist, understands the battle is being won through television and film:

"Most people aren’t really paying attention to what’s going on in Congress or the Supreme Court, but they do turn on the TV and they see people who are funny and make them laugh, who seem absolutely normal to them and look just like them, and yet they’re gay. That, I think, is much more powerful than anything that goes on in Washington D.C."

Spielberg has lent himself to the furtherance of these causes, as evidenced by his exodus from the Board of the Boy Scouts, and is actively seeking to produce films with morally dark object lessons that support this ideology. The cornerstone of support and financial backing for the award-winning American Beauty came from Steven Spielberg – this from a man who has been credited with producing films that primarily contain values and have a moral to the story. The homosexual producer of American Beauty, Bruce Cohen, tells us the following:

"I had heard Steven talk on many occasions of his desire to make smaller movies, to make darker movies, to make the last movie you’d expect him to make. So that gave us great hope."

So, if Spielberg does produce movies that contain a moral, what is the moral of a film whose decorum consists of subversive homosexuality, adultery, fornication and lust whereby a 42-year-old man attempts to bed a 16-year-old girl? Further, not to mention the subject matter, is it wise to let your children or yourself watch the influential creations of anyone who says:

Steven Spielberg

"I want people to love my movies, and I’ll be a whore to get them into the theaters." –Steven Spielberg

Christians are not be to be conformed to the world and its false perceptions through the trickery and schemes of deceitful men (Romans 12:2, Ephesians 4:14). Yet through the wicked exploits of men many Christians have allowed themselves to be "deluded by false wisdom and knowledge" that has been introduced under the guise of entertainment (Isaiah 47:10).

The facts thus far reveal that Spielberg is effectively coaxing millions worldwide into ungodliness through pimping themes of occultism, sexual perversion, antibiblical philosophy and even further is willing to "be a whore" to get them to "love" these things. According to his own admissions his purpose for producing films is so he can "transfer his own fears into the hearts" of others and this for "hostile reasons." The themes and messages regarding biblically condemned supernatural phenomena are derived from his "own experiences," some of which even involve "seeing ghosts." Millions of people are literally lining up to receive the depraved imaginations of this false teacher only to find out too late that the cost is their soul.

Ought Christians to wink at the creations of a man constituting sold out immorality, deception, and contact with the demonic spirit world? Be encouraged to forsake and cut off all of the ungodly activities and influences in your life. The apostle Paul wrote:

"Do not be yoked together with unbelievers. For what do righteousness and wickedness have in common? Or what fellowship can light have with darkness? What harmony is there between Christ and Belial (Satan)? What does a believer have in common with an unbeliever? What agreement is there between the temple of God and idols? For we are the temple of the living God. As God has said: ‘I will live with them and walk among them, and I will be their God, and they will be my people. Therefore come out from them and be separate,’ says the Lord. ‘Touch no unclean thing, and I will receive you. I will be a Father to you, and you will be my sons and daughters,’ says the Lord Almighty." Since we have these promises, dear friends, let us purify ourselves from everything that contaminates body and spirit, perfecting holiness out of reverence for God. –2 Corinthians 6:14-7:1

Christians have received their marching orders. If it is difficult for you to divorce yourself from the fantasy and escape provided by the theater, consider this: In the book of John, Philip asked a question pertaining to Jesus, "Can anything good come out of Nazareth?" The answer, evidenced by the life of Christ, proved to be an overwhelming, yes! Likewise, the question can be asked, "Can anything good come out of Satan, or those who promote his works?" The answer, as Paul’s verse above clarifies, is an overwhelming, NO! Based on this fact it should be easy for people to run, not walk, from the movie pulpits of ungodly men like Steven Spielberg.

Hollywood is definitely influencing the world by conforming society to a value system that is diametrically opposed to God. The liberal US magazine, in its annual report of what’s "in" and what’s "out" in the American mainstream, reported that "Evil" was officially "in" and "Good" was definitely "Out." "Evil, not Love, is not what movies are all about." Of Spielberg’s American Beauty storyline, the screenwriter and creator, Alan Ball, states:

American Beauty
American Beauty

“A Puritan would look at his visions of Angela and go, ‘Oh, that’s disgusting, a middle-aged man lusting after a young girl like that… I look at that and go… ‘That’s not disgusting.’”

Describing a people who pervert righteousness and call evil good and good evil, the Lord says:

"Woe to those who call evil good and good evil. Who substitute darkness for light and light for darkness." –Isaiah 5:20

"Are they ashamed of their loathsome conduct? No, they have no shame at all. They do not even know how to blush. So they will fall among the fallen, they will be brought down when they are punished." –Jeremiah 6:15

The Scriptures foretell that those who reject the grace and forgiveness of God through Jesus Christ will be brought down to hell. This is because all men have committed sin and as a consequence deserve eternal separation from a Holy God. It is a place of eternal torment (Matthew 25, Jude 1), weeping and gnashing of teeth (Matthew 8, 13, 22, 24, 25, Luke 13) with fire and brimstone, whereby those who occupy it have no rest day or night (Revelation 14). If one does not have his name written in the Book of Life, they will be cast into this lake of fire (Revelation 20:15). Jesus has made a way of escape for all those who desire it, through His own payment for our sins on the cross. By humbly receiving Him into our life, turning from all sin and wrongdoing, and trusting in Him for salvation and eternal life, we can know that we are born again and have our name written in the Book of Life. This is God’s will for every human being, including YOU!

Understand, in a war, the object is to demoralize, distract and confuse the enemy troops so that they will not be able to fight at their optimum. The success or failure of this tactic oftentimes sets the stage for the actual fighting and is in many ways more strategically important. Without the full consent of the troops to their commander during these periods of demoralization, all hope of victory may be dashed. Through his skill and expertise, the commander knows how to protect and keep his men in the right frame of mind so as to guide them to victory.

Sadly, many Christians are disobeying their Commander, who has said not to have any unclean thing before their eyes (Psalm 101:3), thus forsaking the reality that we are in a war with the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places and, therefore, are not fighting the good fight of the faith. Instead of guarding their hearts, they are allowing the unclean things of the world and schemes of men to desensitize their hearts to the blinding effects of sin. Images and stories unarguably relay powerful messages – demoralizing propaganda – which wars against the spirit, thereby efficiently transporting many believers from the front lines of God’s will into the infirmary as a casualty of war.

Over a century ago, secular philosopher Soren Kierkegaard wrote:

"Suppose someone invented an instrument, a convenient little talking tube, which could be heard over the whole land. I wonder if the police would forbid it, fearing that the whole country would become mentally deranged if it were used."

A hundred years later the little talking tube of Kirkegaard’s imagination is now one of the family’s best friends. There is strong evidence that viewers are more influenced by its messages than they think. If so, what emerges from the noisy companion in the corner of the living room may be a matter of much deeper concern than some realize.

If you believe that the television is a stumbling block for you, get rid of it. People have lived for thousands of years without television and motion pictures and have done much better without them. Spielberg himself has stated:

"Making movies is an unnatural act. Really, if God had meant for man to make movies, Edison would have been born a thousand years ago."

Not just a thousand years ago, but at the dawn of creation. God made you to spend time looking at His face, not the screen of your television.

If you are indiscriminately watching things that are causing you to sway from your first love, Jesus Christ, get rid of them! (Revelation 2:4-5) Do not ignore the calling of Christ and invite His loving discipline to fall on you. (Revelation 3:19)

Make sure that you are guarding your eyes, your heart and your desire for your first love, Jesus Christ, by not allowing your mind to dwell on the things of earth but rather on the things above.
