The Spice Girls took the world of pop by storm as their debut album sold over 20 million copies, and they were catapulted to overnight super stardom and worldwide fame. They have been billed as the “biggest all girl group of all time”, and their meteoritic rise to fame was said to have only been bypassed by the Beatles before them. So successful and influential was the initial success of the Spice Girls that Pepsi gave them $1.5 million dollars to advertise their cola. If the Spice Girls were influencing teens and preteens with Pepsi alone, we would not have to do an exposé on this group. Due to the fact that the Spice Girls are influencing their millions of fans with more than sugar and spice, we deem it necessary to alert both their fans, as well as parents who love their children, about the poison that underlies the candy coating veneer of the Spice Girls. The lyrical content of their songs, as well as their examples as role models, is enough to turn your daughters into tramps just as quickly as the Spice Girls became a sensation. The Spice Girls have put far more time and emotion into their infomercials promoting sexual promiscuity than they have into the array of products they now advertise. The Spice Girls, as you will see, are far from some innocent teeny-bopper group who pose little or no threat to our youth. On the contrary, the fact that they have been packaged and promoted as a bubble gum group with an innocuous message that has deceived many a parent, warrants even greater alarm. Since their audience is largely pre-pubescent, their message becomes all the more unconscionable and needs to be exposed. You should be aware, whether you are a young person or an adult, the Spice Girls are not girls at all, they are fully grown women who are old enough to be the mothers of many of the children they are leading astray.

When the Spice Girls perform the song “Naked,” they position themselves behind chairs dressed in such a way as to suggest that they are totally naked. They then sing lyrics which leave little to the imagination, “Naked, she knows exactly what to do with men like you…She wants to play seek and hide…This child has fallen from grace…She wants to get naked.” Parents need to ask the question, is it appropriate for our children, or any of us for that matter, to be listening to music which talks about a “child” getting “naked” for “men”? In their song “2 Become 1,” they sing about how good they are in bed. They were described in Entertainment Weekly as, “unrepentant swearers, drinkers, and smokers: broads who speak frankly about sex and are not averse to the occasional frontal flash at a male passerby”. Obviously, the Spice Girls are not the best role models for our daughters or for anyone for that matter, on the contrary they are positively dangerous!

In fact, the Spice Girls are wicked role models who are setting an example through their lifestyles and a precedent through their music to live a very loose and promiscuous lifestyle. Their music actually mocks the biblical concept of right and wrong and encourages their millions of young fans to ignore morality and live ungodly lives. We see in many of their songs the basic satanic philosophy of “Do what thou wilt.” Take for example their song “Do It,” in which they encourage their young fans to follow their example as they refuse to keep their “legs shut”:

Spice Girls

“Come on and do it. Hey
do it, do it, do it…

I will not be told,
keep your mouth shut, keep your legs shut
go back in your place
blameless, shameless, damsel in disgrace

who cares what they say
because the rules are for breaking…
who made them anyway…

come on and do it
don’t care how you look, it’s just how you feel…

come on freak and lose control…

make your own rules to live by…

you might do the wrong thing
for the right reason
don’t just do the right thing to be pleasing…”

After one concert, which was filled with children who were about seven and eight years old, Spice Girl Emma stated, “Here they sing our songs…The kids even knew the licks, they knew everything.” How many of you would hire a baby sitter that talked freely about her loose sexual exploits to your children and told them they would never listen to anybody who would tell them to keep their legs shut? What parent that cared even a little bit about their children would hire a baby sitter that was known to encourage the children to break any or all of the moral guidelines they have been taught to keep? My guess is, not one of you who is a responsible parent and cares about your daughter’s eternal destiny! Sadly though, many a parent will allow such groups as the Spice Girls to influence and corrupt their children. God’s word warns us that in the "last day terrible times would come…[and] children will be disobedient to parents…" (2 Timothy 3:1-5). We need to guard our children from the end time influences, which are designed to turn them against both God and parents! Because of the relatively recent advent of mass media, evil company that we would never in our right minds allow our children to keep has become immediately accessible through the push of a television button or the flick of a switch on a CD player. God’s Word warns us:

"Do not be deceived: ‘Bad company corrupts good morals.’" (1 Corinthians 15:33)

We have a God-given responsibility to do as much as we possibly can to protect our children from the insidious influences of the satanic world system. Our children are precious in God’s sight and they should be precious in our sight as well. If they were so precious that the Lord Jesus gave His life’s blood to redeem them from hell, they are precious enough for us to take time to be involved in their lives on a daily basis to insure we do what we can to lead them to Him! It is because of music and entertainment like that of the Spice Girls that young girls who have had sexual relations by the age of 15 years of age has skyrocketed from 10% during the sexual revolution of the 1960s to over 50% today. The result has been a sharp rise in sexually transmitted diseases among our youth since the 1960’s. God’s Word warns:

"Flee fornication. Every other sin that a man commits is outside the body; but the immoral man sin against his own body." –1 Corinthians 6:18

God’s word states emphatically that those who sin sexually do so against their own body. This truth is vividly illustrated in the hundreds of millions of cases in which we can see the effect an STD has on a person’s body, like that of AIDS. There are over 30 different sexually transmitted diseases today, and some of them are fatal. Today, 40% of sexually active teens are walking around or dying in a hospital somewhere with one or more venereal diseases. Doesn’t anybody even care anymore? Lets WAKE UP! These statistics are alarming and represent millions of real flesh and blood people who are suffering very seriously as a result of sexual sin encouraged by groups like the Spice Girls. If one is so ignorant to believe that the Spice Girls have no influence upon the children, one needs to ask the question as to whether or not Pepsi’s marketing executives have blundered in paying them over a million dollars to advertise their product. Obviously, Pepsi knows that if the Spice Girls are seen drinking Pepsi, millions of young people will think it’s cool to drink Pepsi. Sadly though, Satan has used the Spice Girls to promote sexual sin, rebellion, witchcraft, pride, immodesty and a host of other destructive practices as though they too were cool. His ad campaign has often been to spin that which is destructive in such a light as though it were somehow cool and beneficial. Most youth are too young and inexperienced to discern Satan’s lies and to make wise decisions on their own. Advertisers, like buzzards over their prey, play on affections that need to be overcome, not encouraged in the youth of the world. An ad for a Sony video game states, “Get in touch with your gun-toting, testosterone-pumping, cold-blooded murdering side.” The Spice Girls are a massive advertisement which is played over and over again in the heads of millions of children, not to play with Sony video games, but to "get in touch with your condom-toting, hormone raging, hot-blooded promiscuous side." After interviewing a little girl about eight years old and her mother about how the Spice Girls had liberated her daughter to understand she could dress how ever she wanted too, Spice Girls leader Mel B declared:

Spice Girls

“I think it’s about getting across a message which is what we did with girl power…I always liked Madonna because she’s very expressional. She’s very open about sex and I think we need to be more open about that in this country. I’m glad them kind of people are famous…I’m glad Spice Girls are famous because look at all the nerves that we’ve hit…look at all the big stir we’ve caused.”

When asked about the explosion of teenage pregnancies, Mel B went on to declare

“Yeah there is a problem with teenage pregnancies, yeah there is. But it’s not our fault. We’re not sending everybody to go out and get laid without using a condom.”

Syndicated columnist Cal Thomas’ comments on the parental irresponsibility of those allowing their children to get into groups like the Spice Girls are worthy of repeating here:

“We increasingly teach young girls to adopt the culture’s image of what they should be, judging themselves by their level of coolness, attractiveness and ability to sexually manipulate boys. Parents who are co-conspirators in this cultural rape of their daughters ought to be ashamed of themselves, but they obviously have no shame or they wouldn’t take their kids to see the Spice Girls. Too many parents have surrendered their child-rearing responsibilities. They think that having a pouty face and a bad attitude are the worst things that can happen to their daughters. They aren’t. Out-of-wedlock pregnancy, STDs and broken homes are far worse. Parents who take their young daughters to see such things as the Spice Girls are accessories in eroding their daughters’ innocence, in complicity with the sex educators in many of the government schools. Girls are being herded at earlier ages into attitudes and practices far from the "sugar and spice and everything nice" we used to think, or at least wished, that little girls were made of.”

To that we will say a hearty Amen! The only amendment we would make is that there are even worse consequences to such immoral behavior than, “Out-of-wedlock pregnancy, STDs and broken homes” as bad as they are. God’s word resounds with repeated warnings that the sexually immoral will not only be given over to venereal disease (1 Corinthians 6:19, Romans 1:26-28) but that they will not inherit the kingdom of God either. We are warned not to be deceived on this issue (1 Corinthians 6:9-10) and told that the sexually immoral will be damned in the lake of fire which burns with sulfur for eternity (Revelation 21:8). Satan has packaged his soul damning message in sugar coated candy with a spicy and attractive wrapper for the unsuspecting. It is our responsibility to warn those who are digesting such poison while there is yet time. The Scripture warns us to, "Train up a child in the way he should go and when he is old he will not depart" (Proverbs 22:6). Some ignore the divine warning, ignorantly assuming that their children will grow out of their rebellion in due time. This, however, is rarely the case as rebellion more often simply mutates into more sophisticated and devious forms as children grow older. The book of Job contains a sobering warning for all parents who might be inclined to wink at the sin in their children’s lives and thus refuse to address it, "His bones are full of the sin of his youth, which shall lie down with him in the dust." (Job 20:11).

Spice Girls

The Spice Girls also promote a fair amount of feminist propaganda in some of their music. They are known to chant, “Girl Power”, to their fans so repeatedly that it has become a rallying cry. In their song “Sisters,” they sing, “Now this is a song to celebrate the conscious liberation of the female state.” In their so-called quest for liberation, they have plunged themselves even deeper into bondage and slavery as they have identified with Eve in her rebellion against God and alliance with Satan, “I just want another bite of the apple, dark thoughts need satisfaction. We’re gonna crash, lets make it happen” (from their song “Ga Ga”). Parents who allow their children to listen to music which glorifies rebellion and stimulates the already racing hormones of adolescence are guilty of pouring gasoline on a destructive fire that is already raging within the bosom of many of our young people. Our children need to be taught self-control and the view of sexual relations that God, the creator, has outlined throughout scriptures (Proverbs chapters 5-7, etc). One should not turn to the owner’s manual as a last resort (I like to refer to the bible as the Godufacturers handbook!), but as the first and last word on everything that pertains to life and godliness (2 Timothy 3:15-17, 2 Peter 1:3-4). The scriptures warn that we are not only born in sin, but that foolishness is bound up in the heart of a child. God has given parents a divine directive to bring up their children in the nurture and admonition of the Lord. We were created to worship God with music. Satan has perverted music and sought to redirect its purpose to bring worship to himself as god. If Satan is unsuccessful in duping people to worshipping him with music, he will make the next most effective move. If Satan cannot get them to worship himself as god, he will seek to turn them inward and get them to worship themselves as god. This is why Satan empowers groups like the Spice Girls and seeks to use them to promote the idea of breaking God’s rules and making their own rules as though they themselves were in charge of their own universe. If either objective is met, in the end Satan gets their souls and effectively becomes their god and master resulting in his quest for their eternal damnation. We will stand before God and give an account for the stewardship that God has left in our charge during the time of our sojourning here. This is not written to make you feel bad, but to warn you and encourage you in righteousness. We all have fallen short, and if you are reading this and have fallen short in allowing your children to swallow the candy coded poison of the Spice Girls or other ungodly music, you simply need to acknowledge this and seek God in prayer. Ask the Lord for the grace and discernment in how to lovingly, but firmly, deal with the situation you now face. Let us pray that God will deliver us from every evil that threatens to jeopardize our relationship with Him and each other. Let us remember that while our culture is heading relentlessly to hell, we are warned to be separate from the world and to refuse to be conformed to it (1 John 2:15-17, James 4:4, Romans 12:1-2). May the Lord give us grace to be overcomers in an age full of compromise! My hope and prayer is for your success, be patient, but be sober and vigilant, for our adversary, "the devil, walks about as a roaring lion seeking someone to devour." (1 Peter 5:8).
